Bucharest Mayor’s personal advisor caught red-handed while taking bribe

Anticorruption prosecutors arrested Solomon Wigler, Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu's personal advisor, for 24 hours. They caught him red-handed while taking a bribe of EUR 25,000, on June 3.

Wigler asked a total of EUR 230,000 from a local businessman, who turned witness in this case. In return, Oprescu's advisor promised he will use his influence to get the local urban plans for three supermarkets approved by the Bucharest City Council, according to a statement of the National Anticorruption Department (DNA).

Wigler already received EUR 150,000 in several tranches, according to the prosecutors. He was supposed to get another EUR 51,000 between June 8 and June 12.

Sorin Oprescu’s personal advisor is charged with influence peddling. Prosecutors will send him to court and ask for a 30-day arrest warrant.
