Bucharest may spend EUR 100 mln on new trams

01 September 2015

The Bucharest municipality considers spending EUR 100 million on buying new trams, according to Bucharest mayor Sorin Oprescu. About three-quarters of the trams currently used in Bucharest are over 30 years old.

The municipality may buy its trams from abroad, as the public transport company RATB’s own factory can only produce four or five new units per year, reports local Digi24. A local company from Arad, Astra Vagoane Calatori also produces trams. The municipality doesn’t yet know where it will buy the trams from and at what prices.

“We will need about EUR 100 million to buy new trams. I have no idea how much they cost. Some cost millions, others cost less. The auction will determine that,” said Sorin Oprescu.

The city hall would probably need to borrow the money for the new trams.
