Bounced payments go up again in Romania

21 October 2014

Payments refused by banks - or bounced payments - went up by 14.4% in September, to some EUR 147 million, after almost halving in August month-on-month. Payments made by promissory notes were top of the banks’ refusal list, and made the bulk of the amount, followed by checked which bounced off, some EUR 5.7 million, according to Mediafax newswire, quoting Central Bank data.

Payment incidents and refusals went up in number as well, from some 8,200 in August, to almost 9,000 in September. But the number is still below the peak in October 2013 – when some 12,000 such incidents were recorded.

For the first nine months of the year however, bounced payments were down 22% year-on-year, according to Romania’s Central Bank.
