Barge with 800 tons of fertilizers sinks in Romanian port

12 February 2015

A barge with over 800 tons of chemical substances sank in Romania’s Moldova Veche river port, in Caras-Severin county, on Thursday, February 12.

The 848 tons of fertilizer were well packed in plastic bags, so there is no current danger that the substances flow into the Danube river, according to experts present at the scene, cited by local Digi24.

Local authorities take water samples every hour to see if the fertilizer has reached the water.

None of the barge’s crew members was hurt, and the navigation in the area was not affected.

The cause of the incident is yet unknown.
