Appointment of new ministers in Romania's Govt. remains in limbo

15 January 2019

Appointment of new ministers for two seats of Romania’s Government remains in deadlock mode after President Klaus Iohannis announced in advance that he would reject again, later this week, the nominations made by the Prime Minister Viorica Dancila.

Dancila returned last week the same nominations President Iohannis had already rejected once: Lia Olguta Vasilescu for the ministry of development and Mircea Draghici for the ministry of transport.

"These two proposals will be rejected this week. Within a day or two they will be reviewed and sent to the Government," Iohannis said at Cotroceni, according to local Hotnews.ro.

Asked about possible settlement of the situation, Iohannis said that the Government must simply meet the legal conditions: submit the documents of those nominated according to the legislation in force. He thus hinted to one of the reasons invoked last time when rejecting the nominations: a document missing from the file sent to the Presidency.

But Iohannis also added that the ruling party must to come up with “proposals which convince me and the others that these ministries will be well run” -- a more subjective condition.
