Air traffic in Romania could increase by 6% per year until 2020, according to the European Organization for the Cooperation in Air Navigation Security (Eurocontrol), reports local Incont.stirileprotv.ro.

The passenger traffic has increased threefold in the last ten years, due to low-cost airlines and to higher operating frequencies among national air operators.

Romania’s airports recorded 16.48 million passengers last year compared to 5.55 million in 2006. The number of aircraft movements in Romania increased by 45% between 2006 and 2016, to 201,677.

Eurocontrol’s forecasts were included in a document on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in civil aviation between 2011-2020. The Transport Ministry published the document on Friday last week.
