Accident leaves western Bucharest without power

10 August 2020

An incident during the refurbishment works at one of the power stations of Romanian electricity transport system operator Transelectrica left the western part of Bucharest, including vital institutions, without electricity on Friday afternoon, August 7.

The high-voltage system was affected. Therefore all the critical systems (ATMs, POSs, weather pumping, tramways) depending on low-voltage networks stopped functioning. The Government's headquarters were left without power as well. The subway traffic was not affected by this problem, the company that operates the system, Metrorex, reported, according to Ziarul Financiar

Transelectrica announced that it started an investigation to establish the exact causes of the incident.

"The Domneşti Station is in the process of refurbishment, and we are convinced that the risk of such incidents will decrease significantly as a result of the investment. We apologize to all affected consumers," Transelectrica said in a press release.
