A cleaner Romania: Illegal waste removed from 131 areas after volunteers report them via app

15 December 2015

It’s been three months since the Let’s Do It, Romania! organization has launched a special app via which people can report illegally dumped waste to the authorities.

The volunteers have reported a total of 263 such areas in this period, with at least one complaint being sent to the local authorities in 135 cities. Some 140 complaints have reached the legal 30-day deadline for cleaning, 131 of which have been resolved, the areas being cleaned, according to a statement of the organization.

The nine areas that haven’t been cleaned yet are private areas, but the authorities have asked the owners to clean them.

“The local authorities have been open to collaborating with us and responded to our complaints by cleaning most of the reported areas. This is a positive sign for us and for the volunteers, and we encourage people to keep sending reports via our app,” said Andrei Cosuleanu, executive manager Let’s Do It, Romania!.

Bucharest ranks first among the most active counties, with 700 digital volunteers that have used the app, followed by Cluj (124), Timis (82), Brasov (77), Iasi (72), Constanta (59), and Prahova (54).

Via this app, people can report the illegally dumped waste they see near their homes, on their way to work, or on the street. After the volunteer has reported the illegal trash, the app instantly generates a request for clean-up to the responsible authorities. The user will get updates on the action’s status until the area is cleaned up. The app is available for Android and iOS users.
