WWII bomb found in Danube - 8,000 evacuated in Budapest

19 October 2012

Around 8,000 people had to be evacuated today (October 19 ) from the northern part of Budapest after an unexploded half-tonne bomb was found in the Danube. The US manufactured bomb from World War II was found near a railway bridge to the north of the city. The authorities have evacuated everybody from a one kilometer radius of the bomb, which was discovered on Wednesday night and identified as a US bomb yesterday, according to the Hungarian Ministry of Defense. A bomb disposal team are due to deal with the 500 kg device this afternoon.

The Hungarian capital was under Nazi control for much of the Second World War and allied forces bombed the city heavily. This led to a lot of unexploded devices lying undiscovered for many years and WWII bombs are often found during construction work. It is the tenth such evacuation in Budapest since 2008, according to AFP.
