Wind trumps nuclear for a day in Romania's electricity production mix

07 March 2013

wind parkRomania's wind turbines delivered more energy to the grid yesterday (March 6 ) than most of the other types of electricity producers, according to data from Transelectrica. Wind energy came second after thermal power plants in Romania's energy production mix.

With a 21.4 percent of Romania's electricity production coming from wind, March 6 was so far the best day for this type of alternative energy production since the boom of the sector in Romania. The country has 1,600 MW of wind turbines installed and connected to the grid.

Yesterday, the Cernavoda nuclear power plant had a weight of 19.2 percent in the country's energy production, while the thermal power plants had a higher weight, of 23.5 percent.

The production weights shifted in the meantime and are currently at only 5.5 percent from wind turbines, 32.4 percent for coal, 33.2 percent for hydro powerplants, 17.5 percent from the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, and 11.4 percent from hydrocarbons, according to Transelectrica, which provides real time info about the national grid.
