Star Wars: Episode VII sets new box-office record in Romania

22 December 2015

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which has smashed the previous box office records in the US and globally in its debut weekend, has managed to set a new box office record in Romania as well.

The new Star Wars movie reached ticket sales of close to USD 1 million (RON 4 million) in Romanian cinemas, in the weekend December 18-December 20, according to data presented by local movie site cinemagia.ro.

The Force Awakens thus surpassed the previous record, which had been set by Fast and Furious 7 in April this year. Fast and Furious 7 had sales of about USD 900,000 (RON 3.65 million) in de debut weekend.

However, the Sci-Fi saga Star Wars hasn’t managed to draw as many spectators to local cinemas over the weekend as the action movie starring Vin Diesel and late Paul Walker. Some 175,000 people went to see the new adventures of their favorite characters in Star Wars, compared to over 196,000 who went to see Walker’s last ride.

Star Wars: Episode VII has managed to steal the lead in terms of ticket sales thanks to the wider variety of formats, which also made tickets a bit more expensive. The movie is available in 3D, IMAX 3D, and 4DX formats in Romania.

It is likely that Star Wars: Episode VII will claim a leading place in Romania’s all-time box office revenues ranking.

Avatar, a movie that was released in 2009, still dominates the ranking, with USD 4.5 million (RON 18.6 million) worth of ticket sales and close to 900,000 sectors. Fast and Furious 7 ranks second with USD 2.7 million (RON 11.2 mln) and over 650,000 spectators, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is third with USD 2.65 million (RON 10.8 mln) and 526,000 spectators.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens has set new records for the biggest box office debut weekend in the US and globally. The movie grossed USD 247 million in US cinemas and USD 529 million worldwide.
