Romania’s President says no to loan for Moldova

10 November 2015

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis yesterday asked the Parliament to review the EUR 150 million loan Romania planned to grant to the Republic of Moldova.

The loan agreement was signed by Romania’s and Moldova’s Prime Ministers on October 7, in Chisinau, and approved by Romania’s Parliament in mid-October. The loan was supposed to help Moldova finance its budget deficit and refinance its public debt.

The President thinks that this loan is not advisable given the recent political changes in Moldova, where the pro-European Government has been removed following a no-confidence motion, and as long as there is no certainty that the country will continue its reforms.

President Klaus Iohannis nuanced his position in a Facebook post saying that his request to the Parliament to reexamine the loan to Moldova was not a “door shut” and that it didn’t mean that Romania would give up on helping the Romanians across the border.
