Romania's PM takes on the administration reform, plans to change local taxes

23 February 2016

The Government is working on the public administration reform and Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos gave a few clues about its plans.

The Government could change the current local tax system, said Ciolos. The executive could introduce a tax system based on the properties’ market values and not on their position, he added.

The Prime Minister also talked about regionalization. The current administrative system is inefficient and creating eight regions could be a solution, according to Ciolos.

The local public administration is fragmented, especially in the rural areas. Authorities face difficulties in integrating and coordinating various development programs financed with national and European funds.

Ciolos also pointed out that local administrations were dependent on revenues from the central authority.
