Romania's Government and unions to draft new wage law in public sector

14 January 2016

Romania’s deputy prime ministers, the labor minister, the justice minister and representatives of trade union confederations will form a working group that will develop the new wage law for the public sector within one month, said the Government spokesperson Dan Suciu.

The current law has 110 pay classes, 24 of whom are already overlapping following the increases in the minimum wage starting 2010.

The successive increases in the minimum wage in recent years has led to situations where employees with seniority have come to have lower salaries than newcomers. The law also lacks performance criteria, Suciu added, reports local Mediafax.

The previous Government had also promised to change the public sector wage law, but didn’t finalize the project.
