Romania’s gas imports from Russia are back to normal, but uncertainty remains

15 September 2014

Russia’s natural gas exports to Romania returned to normal over the last weekend, but Russian group Gazprom has not confirmed that Romania will get its full agreed gas quantities this week, according to Romania’s energy minister Razvan Nicolescu.

Last Friday, Nicolescu said that gas imports from Russia were 5% lower than normal, and that local gas transporter Transgaz had been notified by Gazprom that the gas quantities from Russia would also be lower on Saturday and Sunday.

Romania has supported the new economic sanctions taken by the EU against Russia and might face repercussions in terms of gas imports from the country.

Currently, Romania’s imports from Russia are at a very low level, of only 0.2 million cubic meters per day. Romania is currently producing some 31 million cubic meters of gas per day, while consumption is only 16 million cubic meters, according to data from the Energy Ministry.

Romania also has some 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas stored in underground storage units, more than its estimated needs for the winter.
