Romania's Competition Council wants hypermarkets to sell fuel

24 February 2016

The Competition Council has suggested a series of measures to boost competition in the fuel market.

The retailers should enter the fuel market, according to the Council.

The competition would also grow, if the authorities reduced the number of permits needed to enter the fuel market, according to the Competition Council. In countries such as Germany, France or UK, the big hypermarket chains have already entered the fuel market and have important shares.

The Competition Council plans to start a series of talks with the representatives of the big retailers.

Also, if the state reduced the period of authorization for the construction of new fuel distribution stations, the competition on the market would grow, according to the Council.

The watchdog also suggests that a database and an app that included fuel prices from local fuel distribution chains would allow the consumers compare and choose the best prices.
