Romanians pay more of their local taxes by credit card

The value of local taxes paid by credit card in Romania was up by 27% in the first eight months of 2014 compared to the same period of last year, at EUR 30.3 million. The number of credit card tax payments also increased by 22%, to 374,166 transactions, according to data released by Visa Europe.

The figures for the first eight months of 2014 are slightly larger than the figures for the whole year 2013, when 372,000 tax payments by card were recorded for a total value of EUR 30 million.

However, card payment represent only 1% of the total revenues recorded by local authorities in Romania from the income tax and from taxes on property, which were EUR 3 billion in the first eight months.

The largest tax payments by credit card were recorded by the tax authority in Bucharest’s District 1. An average of 99 card payments were registered for each 1,000 residents of the district. Bucharest’s District 1 includes the Baneasa and part of the Pipera neighborhoods, where some of the richest Romanians live.
