Romanians move from city to village, contrary to global trends

23 March 2016

Romania has witnessed a migration phenomenon from city to village, contrary to the trends in other parts of the world, said yesterday Radu Merica, president of the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce (AHK Romania).

“For more than ten years, we’ve been seeing a massive migration of Romanians abroad. Why do people leave? Because they find a better source of revenues elsewhere. They don’t return because they also find a better life quality there. Similarly, we’ve seen a strange phenomenon in the last years: the migration from city to village,” said Merica in a conference about the Cities of Tomorrow, reports local Agerpres.

An ideal city should attract investors, be friendly with the business environment and create jobs, said Merica.

“A city’s most important function is to create jobs, especially well-paid jobs,” he added.

Germany has a huge know-how potential, that the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce can transfer it to Romania, Merica said.

Very few cities in Romania currently have traffic and parking solutions that are at the highest standard.
