23 May 2014

The Romanian tax authority (ANAF) will check the financial statements of some 2,000 people who own large fortunes to see if they correctly declared their income, according to sources quoted by Mediafax newswire.

ANAF will make a list of some 50 people in each of the 40 counties of Romania, between July 1 and September 30, 2014. The audit will start on October 1. This will not include the capital Bucharest where ANAF has already started checks.

So far, the fiscal inspectors have checked a first sample of 30 persons, which were selected from an extended group of 300 taxpayers. According to Mediafax, these investigations revealed that 10 out of the 30 persons have not fulfilled their tax duties and will be investigated further.
