Romanian prosecuted for murdering famous Greek writer

07 January 2015

A 25-year old Romanian man was recently arrested and prosecuted in Greece for allegedly killing prestigious Greek writer Menis Koumandareas. The writer, 83, was found strangled in his Athens home in early December. The door of his apartment had not been forced, suggesting the aggressor knew the writer.

The Romanian is currently investigated for murder and theft, and is believed to have had an accomplice, another 29-year old Romanian, who is still wanted by the Police.

The Romanian killer is referred to as Stefan S, and was arrested at Victoria Square in downtown Athens, according to Greecereporter.com. After hours of interrogation, the Romanian confessed to the crime, which was premeditated in order to rob the victim. He said he and his compatriot visited Koumandareas, with whom he had friendly relations, and asked him for money, as he knew he had cash from having sold a property. As the writer refused to hand him the cash, they got into a fight, which resulted in the writer hitting his head as he fell. Evidence however showed the writer was in fact strangled.

The Greek writer had authored over 20 books, novels and essays, and was two times winner of the Greek Novel Prize.
