Romanian Post wants to sell subscriptions for all telecom providers

16 December 2013

Romania's state-owned postal services company Romanian Post plans to start selling telecom services, such as subscriptions and pre-paid cards for all telecom operators active in Romania. None of the operators will have exclusivity, according to the Romanian Post general manager Ion Smeeianu.

The Telecom Office within the Post would be a big change on the market, where telecom companies sell their services based on exclusivity contracts with retailers.

The Post plans to launch this service and allow clients to choose offers from any telecom company, also using the telecom tariffs comparator created by the National Agency for Communication Regulations (ANCOM). The Post has been talking to Cosmote/Romtelecom group so far, which showed interest in the project. Is it yet uncertain however if the other operators will want to be part of the service.

The Romanian Post is the largest postal services operator in Romania, running a network of over 5,500 units across the country.

At the end of 2012 the company had debts of some EUR 127 million (RON 568 million) and a turnover of around EUR 269 million (RON 1.2 billion).
