Romanian pig farmers lose EUR 20 mln in two months due to imports

30 October 2014

Local pig farmers have been forced to lower prices by over a quarter in the last two months, which led to a loss of EUR 20 million, after low-priced meat entered the Romanian market, according to the Pro Agro federation.

“Pork prices at Romanian producers fell sharply in the last two months, due to dumping prices charged by European producers who lost contracts with the Russian market, after the embargo. Unfortunately, these price drops are not reflected in final prices,” said Alex Jurconi, president of the Pro Agro National Federation, cited by local Capital.ro.

The largest meat quantities come from companies in the Netherlands and Poland.
