Romanian artist brings metro cards installation in first solo exhibition in the last 7 years

22 May 2014

Romanian artist Daniel Balanescu is staging his first solo exhibition in Romania in seven years at Aiurart contemporary art space in Bucharest.

The exhibition, named ‘Crossing. I am the system’, is open until June 20 and comprises around 30 works made by the artist between 2007 and 2014, presented in various forms: collage, painting, inserts of various materials, cement, plastic, wood and textiles.

The project’s central piece is the metro cards installation, made by drawing 2,200 cards.

“The idea of this project is almost 20 years old and coincides with the appearance of the first metro cards in Bucharest,” said Daniel Balanescu. This means those who will visit his exhibition will get to see not only Balanescu's art on metro cards, but the history and evolution of metro cards in Bucharest since the inception of the system.

The artist graduated from the Art University in Bucharest in 1998. He currently lives in the UK, but he exhibited his works in galleries around the world: Paris, Tokyo, Minnesota, Bogota, Cologne, Istanbul, Budapest. More about him here.
