Romanian activist asks the President and the First Lady to stop wearing fur

27 January 2016

Independent MP and activist Remus Cernea has made an appeal to the Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and his wife Carmen Iohannis to stop wearing fur.

Cernea’s request came after the President wore on January 24, at the celebration of the Romanian Principalities Union, a hat that seemed to be made from fur.

Remus Cernea said in his appeal that the intention was “apolitical and strictly related to animal protection and the level of public ethics a public personality should show.”

“Today, in the Western space, almost all the political leaders or public figures who can be associated with politics no longer appear in public wearing fur. If they did, they would be exposed to virulent and widespread criticism,” reads the activist’s appeal, cited by the local media.

According to him, wearing the fur of an animal tortured and killed for this purpose is morally reprehensible. Moreover, the industry that produces such clothing should be discouraged and even closed permanently.

“Mr. President, at the ceremony organized on January 24 to celebrate the Union of the Principalities, you wore a hat that seemed to be made of fur. If this was an unfortunate incident produced without intention and isolated, I think people can easily get over it, if this didn't happen again,” Cernea said.
