Romania to create airline passenger database to identify possible terrorists

15 July 2015

Romania is to create the Passenger National Intelligence Unit, a structure that will supervise the safety of flights to and from Romania.

Local authorities will create a database that will contain passengers’ names, surnames, and itinerary. Based on this data, the authorities will filter the travelers suspected of having links with terrorist organizations.

The passengers will be identified in the database before landing on any airport in Romania. That way, the police can hold any terrorist suspect in record time, reports local Digi24.

Airline companies will give passengers’ data to the authorities. Police officers will then process the data to see if there is any threat.

The Romanian state will pay EUR 15 million for this monitoring system. Most of the money will come from the European Commission. The UK, France, and Denmark are already using such a monitoring systems.
