Romania has the highest number of road deaths in EU

Romania remained the country with the highest number of road deaths per million inhabitants last year, namely 95. It was almost double compared to the EU average of 51.5 deaths.

However, the number of road deaths dropped by 21% in Romania compared to 2010.

In the European Union, some 26,000 people lost their lives on roads in 2015, down by 5,500 compared to 2010. Nevertheless, the number didn’t improve compared to 2014.

Some 135,000 suffered serious injuries on the roads in the EU last year, according to the European Commission.

The social cost generated by the road deaths and injuries is estimated at minimum EUR 100 billion. The social cost includes material damages, medical care, property damage.
