RO environment ministry launches clean-up campaign

05 April 2022

The Environment Ministry kicked off a campaign aimed at supporting the cleaning up of littered areas across the country.

The campaign is meant as a reminder to local authorities that clean-up activities fall within their responsibility, environment minister Barna Tánczos said. “This is why, in addition to the call to get involved, we offer administrative units a financing program for these activities with a total budget of RON 20 million (EUR 4 million). If we do not manage waste properly, we will not only fail to change the face of Romania, but we will also lose economically,” the minister said.

The campaign, set to run between April 4 and May 4, will offer funding of in between RON 3,000 (EUR 600) and RON 30,000 (EUR 6,000) to projects that aim to clean up littered areas, including around lakes and rivers, fields and forests.

As part of the campaign, waste will be collected only if it is not covered by contracts closed by the applicants for funding with licensed operators, the ministry explained in a release.

Besides the local authorities, institutions such as the state-owned forest administrator Romsilva, Romanian Waters Administration ANAR, and the National Environment Guard will also get involved, the minister said.
