24 September 2014

Supermarket chain Mega Image, part of Belgian group Delhaize, will reach 350 units in Romania after opening four new Shop&Go proximity shops this week, the company has announced.  Two of the new shops will be in Bucharest and the other two in Constanta.

Mega Image has been one of the most aggressive retailers on the local market in recent years in terms of expansion. From just 22 supermarkets at the end of 2007, the company reached 105 units at the end of 2011 and 300 units at the end of 2013.

Mega Image opened another 50 shops so far this year and has also signed a deal to take over 20 supermarkets operated by meat producer Angst. The transaction is currently under review by the Romanian Competition Council.

The strong network expansion also brought it higher sales. Last year, it posted a turnover of EUR 530 million, five times higher than in 2007.

Mega Image has recently started selling its products online, via a platform it developed together with Romanian online retailer eMAG.
