Romania's Social Democrats to initiate internal local elections within a month

The leader of Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD), Marcel Ciolacu, who negotiated the coalition with the Liberals (PNL) that paved the Social Democrats' way to the senior ruling partner position, announced the initiation of procedures aimed at leading to internal elections for the appointment of local leaders.

Ciolacu seems to prepare for running in the presidential elections in 2024, the year of super-elections.

A meeting of the National Political Council will take place within a month in order to schedule the internal elections in all the territorial administrative units in which the local administration is under the control of the Social Democrats. A separate process will be organised for the other administrative units.

"We will prepare a National Political Council as soon as possible, maximum one month, for the start of the internal elections in PSD, from the bottom up, in all territorial administrative units, in all localities in the counties where at this moment the local authorities, the town halls and the county councils were won by PSD. We will have a program for the rest of the counties as well," Ciolacu said on Tuesday, May 10, after the meeting of the party's National Political Council, according to News.ro.
