13 January 2017

Twelve new paintings and five collages by famous Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie will go on display at the Pace Gallery in New York this January.

The exhibition, called Adrian Ghenie: Recent Paintings, will stay open from January 19 to February 18, 2017.

“The exhibition will mark Ghenie’s first solo show in New York in almost four years and will feature the third version of the painting The Storm (2016). The new paintings illustrate the progression of Ghenie’s works towards greater and greater abstraction,” reads the event’s presentation on the Pace Gallery website.

Adrian Ghenie is one of the most appreciated young artists in the world. Born in Baia Mare, Romania, in 1977, Ghenie graduated in 2001 from the University of Art and Design in Cluj. Over time, he has been the subject of solo exhibitions at several museums around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2012–2013), the Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kuns (S.M.A.K.), Ghent (2010–2011), and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest (2009–2010). Moreover, his artworks have been included in many other exhibitions. In 2015, he represented Romania at the Venice Biennale.

2016 was an excellent year for Adrian Ghenie. In October, the artist has set a new personal record, after his painting Nickelodeon sold for USD 9 million at the Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Auction organized by Christie’s in London.

In mid-November, two of his paintings sold for a total of over USD 5.3 million at Christie’s Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York.
