Paid hitchhiking could become illegal in Romania, as new draft law sets fines for drivers without transport license

17 December 2013

Hitchhiking might become illegal in Romania, as the authorities want to apply fines for drivers who take along hitchhikers and receive money for the service.

The authorities will apply fines between RON 1,000 and RON 5,000 – or EUR 222 to EUR 1,100 – to drivers who do not have a license to transport passengers, but who pick up hitchhikers.

The Transport Ministry, which initiated the draft law, argues that hitchhiking is illegal as it undermines the activity of authorized transport companies, the state budget, and even traffic safety.
