No-confidence vote against Romanian Government, on Thursday

17 December 2018

Romania’s lawmakers will debate and give vote on the no-confidence motion against the cabinet led by Viorica Dancila on Thursday, December 20.

The motion will first be read in front of the Parliament’s joint chambers on Monday, December 17.

Chamber of Deputies’ deputy-speaker Florin Iordache implied the quorum could hardly be summoned in the very last day before the recess, local G4media.ro reported.

The motion was submitted to the Parliament on Friday, December 14. A number of 163 MPs, members of the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), Popular Movement (PMP), Pro Romania and independent MPs signed the motion. Therefore, the opposition needs the support of another 70 MPs to overthrow the cabinet.

The ethnic Hungarians' party UDMR has the power to tilt the balance, but its leaders have so far expressed scepticism as regards the real intentions of the motion: namely they wanted the opposition to overthrow the government only when an alternative is prepared. However, UDMR said that the final decision will be taken in the day before the vote.
