More resignations within Democratic Liberal Party after low score in local elections

13 June 2012

After the first step made by Elena Udrea, who resigned from the helm of the Bucharest branch of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), more PDL members announced their resignations from the party. Cristian Poteras, the former Sector 6 mayor and head of PDL sector 6, who lost the local elections, announced his resignation as the head of the district organization.

Angela Placinta resigned from the party all together and moved to the National Liberal Party. It was her who was caught crying during the vote of no confidence that overthrew the PDL government earlier this year. Back then, media reports suggested she had been threatened to vote for the Government and not jump ship to the PNL.

Members of the PDL are now asking for the resignation of all party's leaders, starting with Emil Boc, the former PM, who barely won the Cluj Napoca mayor seat. Boc got 40.6 percent of votes, while his opponent Marius Nicoara from USL, took 39.5 percent.

Radu Berceanu, a PDL senator, has mentioned the party's recent fallout as one to be included in Guinness Book of Records: “We had a Prime Minister, a head of the Chamber of Deputies, the head of the Senate and the President of the country within our party, but we lost it all and ended up in this situation. Is there another such example in the world? I doubt it,” said Radu Berceanu.

PDL got a worse than expected score in the recent local elections. The USL have taken 41 percent of the mayoral seats across Romania, well ahead of the PDL, with 15 percent, after 93 percent of the votes counted, according to the Central Electoral Bureau’s official data. The USL also got the majority of votes in local councils across the country, having won 32 percent of the votes, while the PDL got 15 percent.

After the elections, the news about former PM Mihai Razvan Ungureanu launching a new party with members from PDL surfaced in the media. We wrote about it here.
