Lithuania and Romania to cooperate for alternative routes of natural gas transmission

13 September 2012

Romania and Lithuania will cooperate to provide alternative routes for gas transmission said Dalia Grybauskaite, president of Lithuania after a meeting with Traian Basescu, noting the European Southern Corridor projects and the future Nabucco pipeline (in picture).

“Lithuania and Romania will cooperate in their efforts to end as soon as possible the energy isolation of distinct regions in the EU, in energy and nuclear security problems, and also to ensure an alternative natural gas supply. The future European Southern Corridor that will pass through Romania and the Nabucco pipeline can open new opportunities for natural gas imports to Lithuania," declared Grysbauskaite in a press release.

The Lithuanian President also highlighted both countries' dependence on Gazprom for natural gas supplies, saying that alternative interconnected energy routes, the development of natural gas terminals and nuclear projects were major priorities. "Lithuania and Romania have another common goal: to join the pan-European energy market,” President Grybauskaite added.

The Nabucco gas pipeline, for natural gas transportation from Asia to Europe, is also the main component of the Southern Corridor. It will connect the richest areas of natural gas resources in the world - the Caspian region and the Middle East - with the European consumer markets.
