Large nuclear accident intervention exercise to take place in Romania next week

09 October 2015

More than 600 people and some 80 vehicles will take part next week in Axiopolis 2015, a protection and intervention exercise in case of a nuclear accident at Romania’s Cernavoda nuclear power plant.

For five days, between October 12 and October 16, Constanta county will host a complex exercise focused on managing an emergency situation created by a severe nuclear accident at Cernavoda power plant. The activities will officially start on October 13, 10:00, according to a statement of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations.

“Managing these types of emergencies requires a continuous improvement of the skills for nuclear emergency management, a verification of the decision-making information flow, developing the intervention staff's teamwork skills, and increasing the population’s knowledge of protection measures,” reads the statement.

During the exercise, the participants will have to evacuate people from the site, manage emergency situations generated by fire, and give emergency medical assistance. They will also check the alert and notification system in the area, will check and decontaminate the population and the vehicles, will provide qualified first aid, and will evacuate the victims from the risk area.
