Labor minister says further public wages cuts possible next year

01 June 2010

The Romanian Labor minister Mihai Seitan says it is possible for salaries in the public system to be cut between 30 and 50 percent next year, even with the 25 percent expected cut this year. “There is no joy to cut other people's pensions and salaries, but if you hope that at the end of the six months there will be a comeback, you will do it. If not, it is possible to cut further 30 or 50 percent next year, which is highly probable or even more serious,” said minister Seitan.

If the Government hadn't taken the anti-crisis measures this year, in 2011 it would have been possible to cut the salaries even by 70 percent.
