Intelligence Service: Romanian prepaid cards are used in Iraq and Syria

28 March 2016

Romanian prepaid cards have been used in several conflict areas, including in Iraq and Syria, according to the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI). These cards can be used by members of terrorist organizations, SRI has told local news station Digi24.

The service couldn’t confirm if these cards were related to the attacks in Paris and Brussels.

The Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos recently said that the Romanian Intelligence Service had been asking for more instruments that could allow it to closely monitor the security situation. He added that the agency had been complaining mostly about the rules around the prepaid cards, arguing that cards from Romania may have been used to prepare attacks in the European Union.

In Romania, people can buy mobile phone prepaid cards without showing an ID. SRI has been trying to change this for some time now.
