The number of building permits for residential buildings in Romania increased by 11.2% in August compared to August last year, to 4,415.

By comparison, the number of building permits went up by 20% in July year-on-year.

The overall growth was mainly due to increases in two regions in Romania, namely North-East and Bucharest-Ilfov. Over 62% of the total number of building permits were issued in rural areas.

In total, local authorities issued 27,605 building permits in the first eight months of this year, up 6.2% compared to the same period in 2016.

Over 38,650 permits were issued in 2016, down 1.2% over the previous year. The decline was due to a lower demand in Bucharest, as well as in the eastern and southern parts of Romania. In 2015, the authorities issued over 39,000 building permits.
