Former Romanian minister Fenechiu transferred from police custody to maximum security prison

Former Transport Minister Relu Fenechiu, who was recently sentenced to five years in jail without parole in a case nicknamed “The Transformer”, was transferred from police custody to the maximum security penitentiary in Iasi, Romania.

“The original mandate arrived and Relu Fenechiu was transferred to the penitentiary. No problems were encountered,” Alexandru Chelaru, spokesman of Iasi County Police told local news agency Mediafax.

The former minister, his brother Lucian Fenechiu and Bogdan Damian will be in a quarantine regime for 21 days.

Relu Fenechiu turned himself in to the Iasi County Police of Thursday evening (January 30), after being sentenced to five years in prison without parole. His brother Lucian Fenechiu got a similar sentence.

The court case involved the sale of old transformers and switches via his companies to the Electricity Maintenance Subsidiary Moldova, but at high prices.
