Fixed internet speed in Romania, up by 18% in 2017

The average download and upload speed of fixed internet connections in Romania increased by 18% in 2017 over the previous year, according to data released by the telecom sector regulator ANCOM.

The average download speed of fixed connections stood at 112.1 Mbps, namely 186.6 Mbps for wired connections and 61.3 Mbps for wireless connections. The average upload speed reached 93.1 Mbps. The average speed statistics are based on speed tests performed on ANCOM’s Netograf.ro app.

Orange provided the highest download speeds for fixed internet connections in 2017, namely over 300 Mbps. The operator started offering fixed internet services rather recently, after signing a partnership to use the fiber optics network of Telekom Romania. RCS&RDS provided the second-highest download speed, of 220 Mbps, followed by UPC Romania (178 Mbps), Nextgen Communications (128.6 Mbps) and Telekom Romania (114.4 Mbps).

The counties of Covasna and Brasov in central Romania had the fastest fixed internet networks in Romania, in 2017, with average download speeds of 147 Mbps, respectively 123 Mbps, according to ANCOM data. Bucharest was only third, with 119.1 Mbps, followed by Ilfov county (117.6 Mbps), Dolj county (116.5 Mbps) and Vaslui (115.8 Mbps). Surprisingly, Vaslui county, which is one of Romania’s poorest, had some of the fastest fixed internet connections in the country, surpassing more developed counties such as Iasi, Cluj and Timisoara, where the IT industry is much more developed.
