WTA Tennis: Romanian Simona Halep, the most popular tennis player in the world

27 November 2015

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep top the ranking of the most popular women’s tennis players in the world, for the second year in a row, according to WTATennis.com, the official website of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association).

“For the second year in a row, the one and only Simona Halep - who had her best ever season, finishing at No.2 on the year-end WTA Rankings - was the most clicked player on wtatennis.com.”

Simona Halep surpassed the world’s number one Serena Williams, who won three Grand Slam tournaments this year, and Russian Maria Sharapova.

Simona Halep had a great start this year, with victories at Shenzhen, Dubai and Indian Wells, but continued with poor results at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. She managed to recover and save her year with good results in the American tournaments, reaching the semifinals of the US Open for the first time, and playing two other finals in Toronto and Cincinnati. She also qualified to the WTA Finals in Singapore for the second time in a row but didn’t manage to repeat last year’s performance when she reached the final.

Halep recently announced that she would be working with Australian tennis coach Darren Cahill next year.

After a good 2015, Romania’s Simona Halep hopes for bigger things in 2016
