With half of students medically exempt from sports classes, Romanian authorities want more sports hours in curriculum

16 May 2013

Romanian primary and secondary school students will get more sports time in their curriculum, Romania's Education Ministry and Youth and Sports Ministry recently decided. Kindergarteners will have 30 minutes of light sports every day, 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes at midday, while the number of sports classes for middle school will double.

For the segment first to fourth grade, there will be four sports classes a week, and for middle school, the number will double, to two hours. Sports classes are lacking in universities, according to Camern Tocală, state secretary in the Youth and Sports Ministry, who attended a conference about the upcoming Bucharest International Half Marathon.

Recent statistics show half of Romanian students use sick notes to get out of sports classes. A previous ministry decision mentioned a plan to dedicate one full day in the beginning of October to sports, with nobody exempted, even those with disabilities would be expected to choose a sport in which to participate. The Health Ministry has been asked to try to reduce the number of 'fake' medical certificates which allow students to be exempted from sports classes.
