Which are the most popular destinations for passengers flying away from Romania?

Italy, Germany, and the UK are the top three destination countries for passengers flying away from Romanian airports as well as the top three source countries for incoming passengers.

More than a fifth of the 6 million passengers flying away from Romanian airports on regular flights went to Italy (1.24 million), according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS). Some 925,000 went to Germany, over 790,000 went to the UK, close to 580,000 went to Spain, and 391,000 went to France.

The numbers are similar for incoming passengers (see table below).

Destination countries

When looking at the destination cities, London comes on top, with over 740,000 passengers flying from Romania to London’s three airports (Luton, Heathrow, and Stansted) on regular flights. Munchen, Rome, Paris, and Milan were also some of the most popular destinations last year. See the top 15 destinations below.

Destination airports

The number of passengers flying from and to airports in Romania was close to 13.3 million in 2015, 14.5% higher compared to 2014. The number boarded passengers was 6.68 million while the number of landed passengers was 6.59 million, INS data shows.

The number of passengers on regular flights was close to 12.9 million, up by 13.9% year-on-year, and the number of passengers travelling with charter flights increased by 37.6% to 393,000. The top three countries for charter flights were Turkey, Greece, and Israel. While Turkey and Greece are popular holiday destinations for Romanians, Israel is also a source of charter tourists to Romania.

Romania’s biggest airport is the Henri Coanda International Airport, which serves the capital Bucharest, with 9.27 million passengers in 2015. The Cluj-Napoca International Airport was second, with over 1.48 million passengers, and the Timisoara International Airport was third, with 0.92 million passengers. Other important airports in terms of traffic were Iasi, Bacau, and Targu Mures, with over 300,000 passengers each.
