12 October 2011

The Romanian state cashed in EUR 1.27 billion in excises on tobacco in the first nine months of this year, a growth of 38 percent compared to the same period of last year, according to the country's Fiscal Administration Agency. The increase was mainly due to a drop in cigarette smuggling, as the excise price went up by only 3.5 percent this year, compared to last year.

Cigarette smuggling reached 11.8 percent in September in Romania, a drop compared to 15.7 percent in July, according to Novel Research.
