The European Commission resumes transport infrastructure payments to Romania

15 December 2011

The European Commission announced its intention to resume payments for transport infrastructure improvements in Romania. 'Improvement of regional and local transport’ within the Regional Operational Program in Romania, is financed under the EU's cohesion policy.

The European Commission stopped payments in June this year because of mismanagement and failure to comply with the Commission's procurement rules. The payments were discontinued after the findings of an audit report, which revealed an incorrect application of procurement rules and deficiencies in the management and control of public procurement.

Progress in the reform of the management and control of cohesion policy funds procurement has satisfied the Commission and the green light to restart payments has been given. European Affairs Minister Leonard Orban has overseen the reform process.
