Health minister warns Romania could see an increase in Covid-19 cases if prevention measures aren’t followed

03 September 2020

Romania could see 2,000 coronavirus cases daily if the prevention measures aren’t followed, health minister Nelu Tătaru said.

Romania reported 1,298 coronavirus cases on Wednesday, September 2, pushing the total to 89,891.

“It will be a packed autumn, not a difficult autumn, but a packed one,” he told television station B1TV.

“We had variations in the number of cases related to the number of tests carried out,” the minister said, quoted by News.ro. He also mentioned an “exaggerated easing beyond the rules concerning the restarting of some activities in the past months.”

Tătaru said all the measures taken to ease the restrictions were needed and argued the school year needed to start.

“These were needed measures, both educationally and economically; if we are talking about restaurants and theaters, these measures were taken to ensure safety. If we follow the rules, we will remain at the plateau we are now. If we don’t, we can expect an increase in the number of cases from one day to the other,” he said, News.ro reported.

The minister also said people should get used to living with the pandemic for another year and a half or two as “this virus will not go away that easily.”
