Three Romanian photographers have been shortlisted for the Open competition of the 2019 Sony World Photography Awards, which recognize the world’s best single images from 2018.
Alex Robciuc, with the image Vasile Oanea (opening photo), and Remus Daescu, with the image The Mona Lisa, are on the shortlist in the Culture category, while Antonio Gandore is on the shortlist in the Landscape category with the image The Scream.
The Open shortlist has ten categories, ranging from landscape and street photography to portraits and nature. All Open shortlisted photographers compete to become category winners, with the chance to be selected as Open Photographer of the Year and to win USD 5,000.
The winners of the Open competition will be announced on February 26. The shortlisted works in the Open competition can be seen here.
The image Vasile Oanea depicts Vasile, who has lived his entire life in Maramures county, in the picturesque village of Breb. The Mona Lisa looks at the dynamics of the people admiring the famous painting of the same name inside the Louvre Museum. The Scream is a photography taken in Romania, at a poisoned lake from a mining area.
