Romania's trade deficit goes up in local currency

Romania posted a trade deficit of EUR 9.65 billion last year, close to the 2011 deficit. The increase year-on-year was the equivalent of some EUR 380 million when expressed in the local currency, with exports up 4.6 percent and imports up 4.5 percent. When expressed in EUR, there was a decrease of some EUR 109 million, according to the National Statistics Institute. Romania's trade deficit in 2011 was the equivalent in RON of EUR 9.72 billion, similarly to 2010.

When expressed in EUR, because of the exchange rate fluctuation, exports were down 0.5 percent, while imports, down 0.6 percent.

Romania's trade with the EU stood at some EUR 31.6 billion for exports, and EUR 40 billion for imports, making the bulk of trade – 70 percent of exports and 73 percent of imports.

Romania exported cars and transport equipment – 40.4 percent, and the same group of products covered 33.7 percent of the imports, while other manufactured products covered 34 percent of the exports and 29 percent of the imports.
