Romania’s Hotel of Ice attracts more than 2,000 tourists

28 December 2015

More than 2,000 tourists visited Romania’s only Hotel of Ice located in the Fagaras Mountains, at an altitude of 2,000 meters.

The tourists had to wait up to four hours to climb by cable car from Balea Waterfall to Balea Lake, reports local Agerpres. The cable car is the only way one can reach the Hotel of Ice, as the high-altitude road Transfagarasan is currently closed for traffic.

Most of the tourists went to Balea Lake just to take some pictures inside the famous hotel. The tourists have to pay RON 15 (EUR 3.3)  to visit the hotel.

However, the tourists have also begun to check-in at the Hotel of Ice starting December 22. All 14 rooms are fully occupied for the holidays, according to Lidia Badila, the hotel's spokesperson. Most of the tourists are Romanian, English, and German. A double room costs RON 440 (close to EUR 100) per night.

The hotel’s owners are also getting ready to build ice igloos for their guests. Accommodation in an igloo will cost RON 660 (EUR 146) per night.

Tradition continues: Work kicks off on Romania’s Hotel of Ice
