German container ship MSC Flaminia, which was partially destroyed by a fire in 2012 and then decontaminated in Denmark will be repaired in Romania at the Daewoo Mangalia shipyard with a USD 22 million contract.

It will take three months for the ship to be repaired, according to the Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries shipyard, which won this contract during a bid against two other companies.

Around 200 Romanian employees will work on this project. Meanwhile, the ship's crew will continue to stay onboard.

The ship arrived in May 2013 in the Constanta port in Romania, awaiting approval from Romanian authorities to be decontaminated and repaired after catching fire while in the Atlantic Ocean in 2012. Three died in the fire.

The was then towed to Germany, and then to Romania for repairs, where it stayed until November 2013. Then it was sent to Denmark for decontamination, before carrying out the repairs.

The ship was carrying 14,000 tonnes of extra waste which had to be sent back to Germany, but the ship owner decided to take the ship elsewhere for decontamination instead. MSC Flaminia was built in 2001 by South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the same company which runs the Romanian shipyard now working on repairing the ship.
